Difference Between Frameless Torque Motor & Servomotor!

What distinguishes a torque motor from a servomotor is a commonly asked question. It is critical to remember that there is no ideal answer when distinguishing between a frameless torque motor and a servo motor. Both motors are utilized in a wide range of industries and applications. Both of them are excellent motors. Hence, speed and acceleration are crucial when choosing between a torque and servo motor.

Servo Motors  

Although many different motor types can be used in servomotors, the most popular type is a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with a closed-loop control system. These servomotors typically feature an output shaft, a small diameter, and a long axis. Typically, they can be mounted onto the application using a NEMA-style attachment. These motors frequently include an extra gearbox.  

Torque Motors  

Similar to ordinary servomotors, torque motors are typically PMSM motors that can be equipped with a closed-loop control mechanism; however, the idea and design are distinct. A torque motor frequently has a big diameter and a short axis because it is toroidal in shape, like a doughnut. The torque motor produces a lot of torque due to the form difference, but its RPM is constrained.   

On the other hand, a normal servomotor has a significantly higher RPM but produces much less torque. To achieve the necessary speed-to-torque ratio, it is consequently frequently equipped with a gearbox; however, this gearing degrades efficiency and accuracy.  

Difference Between a Frameless Torque Motor & A Servo Motor  

There doesn't have to be a difference to give a brief and direct response. One kind of servomotor is a torque motor. A sensor that produces a feedback signal enables a servo motor, which has high control over position, acceleration, and velocity.   

The motor's control system uses this signal to self-regulate its output. Also known as a machine with a "closed loop." A torque motor can be converted into a servomotor by adding an encoder, for example, to generate this feedback signal.  

Which One to Pick?  

Due to their greater accuracy, torque motors are primarily employed for some applications, such as indexing tables.  

Conventional servo motors are typically utilized for high RPM and low torque applications because they can travel at the required speeds.  

Conventional servomotors can be equipped with various gearboxes to create the appropriate speed-to-torque ratios using available motor designs.  

When a torque motor design is already in existence and suited to your application, it frequently outperforms traditional servomotors. So, the application and what is already on the market determine the optimal option.  

Both types of motors can be employed for various applications, and the optimum price-performance ratio is typically the deciding factor.
