Importance of BLDC for Vehicles?

Electric vehicles are not a new concept for the world, but technological growth and increased concern about the environment result in the dire need for electric vehicles. Traditional vehicles have a negative impact on the environment due to the emission of CO2 & other harmful gases. There are multiple types of motors, such as DC series motors, brushless DC motors, etc., incorporated into electric vehicles.

What is BLDC Motor?

The name itself makes it clear that BLDC motors are brushless. Electromagnet-wound coils are included in the stator, and permanent magnets are fastened to the rotor. Electricity is changed into mechanical energy by electrical commutation. This is a fundamental difference from conventional brushed DC motors, which can have electromagnets in both the stator and the rotor to boost magnetic fields.

The magnetic interaction that the electromagnets force on the permanent magnets is what generates the torque of the brushless motor. Nowadays, brushless motors are far more prevalent than brushed motors. But there are many different applications for both. Automobiles and home appliances both still frequently employ brushed direct current motors. Because brushed motors are the only ones that can adjust the torque to speed ratio, they also have a significant industrial specialty.

In Runner BLDC Motor

In this type, the stator is positioned outside, and the motor's rotor is inside. The In-runner design is slightly bigger than the Out-runner layout since these motors need an external transmission system to transmit energy to the wheels. It results in even more significant mechanical losses and builds volume.

Out Runner BLDC Motor

The motor stator is housed inside, while the rotor is outside. It is sometimes referred to as a hub motor because the wheel is directly attached to the external rotor.

The motor occasionally has planetary gears. This motor makes the vehicle smaller because it does not need a gear system. An external gear system is not required with this type of motor.

Outrunner motors are capable of substantially higher torque levels than inrunner motors with the same construction capacity. It also eliminates the need for a location to mount the motor. To compensate for their lesser torque, inrunner motors usually come with gears or gearboxes.

Why Are Brushless DC Motors So Important?

  • Brushless DC motors are widely used in numerous electric vehicles. Some of the reasons are listed below why BLDC motors are so popular:

  • BLDC motors' excellent torque-to-weight ratio for electric vehicles is crucial since it enables us to make the car lighter without sacrificing torque.

  •  BLDC motors are more reliable as there is less equipment to manage due to the absence of brushes. Consequently, it is also simple to maintain.

  •  BLDC motors are said to be more energy efficient than brushed DC motors because they can convert more electrical power into mechanical power due to the lack of friction in brushes.

  • Brushless DC (BLDC) motors operate silently because there is no friction between the brushes. The electric vehicle may move more silently as a result.

  • BLDC motors operate without sparking, unlike traditional DC motors that need brushes. This is a fascinating characteristic of brushless motors since it enables their usage in locations where sparks are dangerous. For instance, in settings where flammable gases are present.
